Founded in Norfolk, England, in 1996, Sealskinz claims to have launched the first laminated waterproof sock on the market. The core of the waterproof models is the Aquasealz membrane in a three-layer construction: a robust outer shell to prevent abrasion, the waterproof yet breathable membrane in the middle that keeps rain and mud out while allowing sweat to escape as water vapor, and a soft functional lining on the inside – made of either merino wool or bamboo, depending on the model. This keeps feet dry without them sitting in their own sweat.

Frequently asked questions about Sealskinz

Which Sealskinz socks are waterproof? Bircham, Raynham, Wretham, and Holverstone have the Aquasealz membrane and reliably keep external water out. The Suffield is a merino liner sock without a membrane and is therefore not waterproof. For all membrane models, please note: water can enter from the top at the cuff when stepping into deep puddles – ensure the shaft height is appropriate for your activity.

Do the socks fit in barefoot shoes? They work with barefoot shoes, but they are cushioned functional socks with noticeable material thickness – they do not provide a paper-thin barefoot feel. Plan for a little extra room in your shoe. If you wear very tightly cut models and still want to stay dry, it is best to choose the Wretham with bamboo lining – while the Suffield is thinner, it is not waterproof. How do I care for the socks? Sealskinz socks can be machine-washed as normal – no special detergent needed. Let them air dry; do not tumble dry.
