What is the Xero Shoes Alpine suitable for?

A winter boot for cold days outdoors: forest trails in the snow, frosty mornings with the dog, the walk from the parking lot to the cross-country ski trail. At around 411 g per shoe (size 42), it remains lightweight.

Warm and dry in snow and slush: The inner boot is completely seam-sealed, and a waterproof membrane is integrated into the upper material. This is complemented by 200 g of insulation and a heat-reflecting insole that shields against the cold ground.

Winter boot without the bulky feel: The 12.5 mm sole construction with zero drop keeps you closer to the ground than a classic snow boot, and the coarse lug pattern provides grip on snow and firm surfaces. A barefoot winter boot for those who want ground feel even in January.

An honest assessment: The sole remains soft and flexible. The Alpine is not designed for alpine terrain, crampons, or treks with heavy luggage.

Can I wear socks with these shoes?

Yes, absolutely. The name "barefoot shoe" refers to the sensation of movement (wide toe box, thin flexible sole, zero drop), not to a bare foot.

How much space should there be in the front of the shoe?

Plan for 12–17 mm of extra space beyond your foot length. For thick winter socks, you will be better off at the higher end of this range.

Is the insole removable in this shoe?

Yes, the insole is removable. It reflects heat upward, so it stays warmer inside; removing it provides a more direct feel of the ground.

I am wearing barefoot shoes for the first time – what should I look out for?

Soreness in your calves and the soles of your feet is normal in the first few weeks – your muscles are being challenged in a new way. Start with 30–60 minutes daily and increase gradually. If you have existing foot complaints or joint problems, consult your doctor or orthopedist before switching.

Can I wear the Alpine with snowshoes?

Yes, according to the manufacturer, they fit well with snowshoes. The flat sole keeps your center of gravity low, and straps over the toes, instep, and heel grip without any issues.
