Buy waterproof barefoot shoes – stay dry through rain and mud

Barefoot shoes and wet conditions are not mutually exclusive: several manufacturers combine a flexible, zero-drop sole and a wide toe box with a waterproof construction. At Barfußwelten, you will find these models for women, men, and children – ready for shipment from our own warehouse in Germany, free shipping on orders over €40 (DE), and with a 30-day return policy including free returns (DE).

Two types of construction – which one is right for you?

Membrane models consist of breathable upper material with an integrated waterproof membrane, such as GORE-TEX or a proprietary manufacturer solution. They keep water out while allowing sweat to escape as water vapor. This is the right choice if you wear the shoe for longer periods at a time – for commuting, hiking, or everyday life.

Rain boots are made from closed-cell material and are therefore inherently waterproof, without the need for a membrane. They are unbeatable in standing water and deep mud, though they are less breathable. Ideal for gardening, walking the dog, or short trips in persistent rain.

What you will not find in this collection are merely water-repellent shoes: in these, only the upper material is treated with a coating so that raindrops bead off, but water will eventually penetrate during prolonged wet conditions. Furthermore, the impregnation wears off and must be reapplied.

Frequently asked questions about waterproof barefoot shoes

Are waterproof barefoot shoes less flexible? A membrane is an additional layer of material, which makes the upper feel slightly firmer than the same model without one. The sole and toe box remain unchanged – there is no change to the rolling motion of the foot or the space for the toes. Rain boots are the stiffest due to their construction.

How warm are the models? Waterproof does not mean warm. A waterproof construction keeps moisture out but does not provide insulation. For cold days, you either need a lined model or you can combine them with warming insoles and suitable socks.

What should I wear underneath? If water runs into the shoe from above over the collar – in tall grass or heavy rain – waterproof socks from Sealskinz can help. They provide protection exactly where the shoe itself reaches its limits.

How do I care for the shoes? Brush off coarse dirt after they have dried. Do not place them on the heater and do not put them in the dryer – heat damages membranes and makes rubber brittle over time. Additionally, follow the manufacturer's instructions for the specific model.
